GENEVA \u2013 The United Nations insisted on Thursday that it was still pushing for accountability for abuses in China\u2019s Uyghur region, after rights groups accused it of inaction.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe situation in Uyghur region remains of concern,\u201d the UN rights office said, one year after it published a bombshell report detailing a litany of violations in the province.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cLaws and policies assessed in our report are still in place,\u201d spokesman Ravina Shamdasani pointed out in an e-mail, stressing that \u201cour 2022 assessment was clear on the need for accountability\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe continue to stand by that, publicly and bilaterally.\u201d<\/p>\n

The comments came hours after\u00a0leading rights groups slammed inaction<\/a>\u00a0by the international community, including the UN, in the year since the report was published.<\/p>\n

The international community has \u201cshied away from the kind of resolute steps needed to advance justice, truth and reparation for victims\u201d, Ms Sarah Brooks, Amnesty International\u2019s deputy regional director for China, said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The response had been \u201cwoefully inadequate\u201d, the rights group said. It singled out UN rights chief Volker Turk for failing to \u201cclearly emphasise the urgent need for accountability for (China\u2019s) alarming violations\u201d.<\/p>\n

Mr Turk\u2019s predecessor, Ms Michelle Bachelet, released her long-delayed report on the situation in Uyghur region on Aug 31, 2022, just minutes before her term ended, after facing significant pressure from Beijing to withhold the document.<\/p>\n

It detailed\u00a0a string of violations against Uighurs and other Muslim minorities<\/a> in Uyghur region, urging the world to pay \u201curgent attention\u201d to the rights situation in the far-western region.<\/p>\n

The report \u2013 harshly criticised by Beijing \u2013 highlighted allegations of widespread torture, arbitrary detention and violations of religious and reproductive rights.<\/p>\n

It brought UN endorsement to long-running allegations that Beijing had detained more than one million Uighurs and other Muslims and forcibly sterilised women, citing possible crimes against humanity.<\/p>\n

But UN Human Rights Council member states last October narrowly voted to reject even holding a debate on its contents.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cUN member countries should not stay silent in the face of crimes against humanity,\u201d Human Rights Watch associate Asia director Maya Wang said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Human Rights Watch and Amnesty voiced disappointment at the level of public follow-up from Mr Turk since he took over as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights last October.<\/p>\n

Ms Shamdasani, however, insisted that Mr Turk stood by his public commitment \u201cto a longer-term process of engagement with the authorities, including on implementing the recommendations of the report\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is absolutely critical to follow up on the report\u2019s recommendations.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since the report was published, the rights office had kept engaged with China on human rights, she added.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have encouraged China to disclose information about the many people whose whereabouts remain unknown and\/or to investigate any disappearance or possible death if this is the case and communicate (with) the family.\u201d<\/p>\n
