{"id":1021,"date":"2018-09-27T16:14:55","date_gmt":"2018-09-27T16:14:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/akademiye.org\/en\/?p=1021"},"modified":"2018-09-27T16:15:46","modified_gmt":"2018-09-27T16:15:46","slug":"human-rights-group-warns-china-using-embassies-to-repress-muslim-uighurs-in-u-s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/akademiye.org\/en\/?p=1021","title":{"rendered":"Human Rights Group Warns: China Using Embassies to Repress Muslim Uighurs in U.S."},"content":{"rendered":"<h5><\/h5>\n<h5><a href=\"http:\/\/akademiye.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/45e0823f-bce5-4162-8423-cd1c8caa48c2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1024 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/akademiye.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/45e0823f-bce5-4162-8423-cd1c8caa48c2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/akademiye.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/45e0823f-bce5-4162-8423-cd1c8caa48c2.jpg 900w, https:\/\/akademiye.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/45e0823f-bce5-4162-8423-cd1c8caa48c2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/akademiye.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/45e0823f-bce5-4162-8423-cd1c8caa48c2-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/h5>\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2018\/09\/26\/human-rights-warns-china-using-embassies-repress-muslim-uighurs-u-s\/\">Breitbart<\/a><\/h5>\n<h5>Beijing is using its embassies and consulates to export repression targeting members of China\u2019s predominantly Muslim Uighur minority group abroad, including the United States, a human rights activist told American lawmakers on Wednesday.<\/h5>\n<p>In written <a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.house.gov\/meetings\/FA\/FA05\/20180926\/108718\/HHRG-115-FA05-Wstate-TurkelN-20180926.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">testimony<\/a> prepared for a House panel <a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/foreignaffairs.house.gov\/hearing\/subcommittee-hearing-chinas-repression-and-internment-of-uyghurs-u-s-policy-responses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">hearing<\/a> on the U.S. response to China\u2019s repression and internment of Uighurs (or Uyghurs), Nury Turkel, the chairman of the Uyghur Human Rights Project, noted that \u201cChina\u2019s export of repression targeting Uyghurs in the United States\u201d is \u201ca clear violation of sovereignty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The human rights activist detailed how the Chinese government is targeting U.S. citizens of Uighur descent, namely journalists and activist, forcing their family members in China into so-called \u201cre-education camps\u201d to intimidate them.<\/p>\n<p>Turkel told the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Chinese government has long sought to control the narrative of Chinese politics within Chinese communities overseas though tools including the education departments of their embassies and consulates, using them to disrupt events held by activists on college campuses and elsewhere\u2026The targets of this harassment include Uyghur and Tibetan rights activists\u2026The goal of the Chinese government\u2019s harassment is to discourage and disrupt political activism among Uyghurs living abroad, replicating the system of control that exists in their homeland. Threatening retaliation against family members who remain within the borders of China is one of the Chinese government\u2019s primary tools.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Chinese government is targeting the families of American citizens and journalists, the human rights activist revealed, telling U.S. lawmakers:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The families of U.S. citizens and Radio Free Asia (RFA) journalists, Gulchehra Hoja, Shohret Hoshur, Mamatjan Juma, Jilil Kashgary, Kurban Niyaz, and Eset Sulaiman, who have been at the forefront of exposing the extent and conditions of the internment camps, have been targeted by the Chinese government in a bid to silence independent reporting. The journalists went public to describe how Chinese authorities have arbitrarily detained family members in internment camps.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Beijing has also attempted to intimidate RFA journalist Shohret Hoshur by sending some of his relatives to the internment camps, also known as \u201cre-education\u201d centers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis kind of harassment and punishment had touched the lives of many Uyghur-American families,\u201d including human rights activist Rebiya Kadeer, Turkel noted.<\/p>\n<p>Turkel urged the United States to take action against China\u2019s mistreatment of Uighurs, suggesting that the Asian giant is committing \u201cgenocide\u201d against the minority group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCredible reports of deaths in custody, torture, and systemic political indoctrination must propel the United States into action on behalf of the Uyghurs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s administration has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2018\/04\/22\/repression-of-uighur-muslims-in-china-worsened-in-2017\/\">condemned<\/a> China over the internment of Muslim Uighurs<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration and some American <a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2018\/08\/31\/un-calls-china-free-uighurs-alleged-re-education-camps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">lawmakers<\/a> are considering imposing\u00a0<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/09\/10\/world\/asia\/us-china-sanctions-muslim-camps.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">sanctions<\/a> on Chinese officials involved in the oppression of Uighurs.<\/p>\n<p>Turkel told U.S. lawmakers:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Chinese government has portrayed Uyghur ethnic distinctiveness as a threat to ordinary Chinese and the Uyghurs\u2019 Islamic faith as a contagious disease. Sinification through Chinese language and culture sessions and compulsory denunciations of Uyghur culture and belief in Islam in the internment camps are justified as necessary measures in reducing this threat and in finding Beijing\u2019s final solution.<\/p>\n<p>State-led racial discrimination and criminalization of Islam and any expression of Uyghur identity and culture have affected all Uyghurs in the Uyghur homeland and China, as well as Uyghur Americans and hundreds of thousands of Uyghurs who live outside their home region.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>China has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2018\/08\/13\/china-defends-crackdown-on-uighur-muslims-denies-sending-1-million-to-re-education-camps\/\">sent<\/a> \u201cover a million and possibly more\u201d Uighurs accused of terrorist and separatist activities and their children, into internment camps across Uighur-majority Xinjiang, the largest province in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf both parents are in jail, the child will be sent to a re-education centre for \u2018special children.\u2019 The child is forbidden to go to school with the normal [author\u2019s italics] children because the parents have a political problem,\u201d a former instructor at one of the internment camps\u00a0<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/f0d3223a-7f4d-11e8-bc55-50daf11b720d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">told<\/a> the <em>Financial Times<\/em>\u00a0in July.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <em>Financial Times<\/em>, Chinese authorities are employing forcible separations of Uighur children from their extended families.<\/p>\n<p>China cites terrorist attacks in Xinjiang attributed to Uighur jihadis to justify its heavy-handed security measures and \u201cre-education centers.\u201d The Asian country has long denied oppressing its Uighur minority.<\/p>\n<p>Source:\u00a0https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2018\/09\/26\/human-rights-warns-china-using-embassies-repress-muslim-uighurs-u-s\/<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Breitbart Beijing is using its embassies and consulates to export repression targeting members of China\u2019s predominantly Muslim Uighur minority group abroad, including the United States, a human rights activist told American lawmakers on Wednesday.
